Be the awareness behind your emotions!

‘Sometimes the mind is like a wild horse. It doesn’t know how to behave. If emotions and passions are not controlled, how can you have stillness?’ (Master Choa Kok Sui)

‘Rather than be the thought or emotion, be the awareness behind them’. (Eckhart Tolle)

Expect Purging

Once your mind starts to become still, expect a lot of emotional crap to come to the surface.

If you think about it, your mind has been working in a particular way for years and years with a life driven by tasks and society’s goals.

With the onslaught of technology, there is no real quality time for introspection or to process one’s inner feelings.

Two weeks holiday here and there are not enough. You barely get a chance to rest.

It is no surprise, then, that feelings and emotions that have been buried in the subconscious for years suddenly start to come up.

It could be fear, guilt, shame, sadness, pain.

The important point is to be aware it is happening.

 Let it happen.

Let those emotions out of your system.

Cry, shout, scream, do whatever you have to. This is healing.

On the flip side, positive emotions may overwhelm you.

Let that happen too.

Eventually, you will reach a point of balance.

Go Easy with Yourself

Learning to be aware of your emotions as they come and go is not easy.

Don’t beat yourself up if you have up and down days.

Be patient.

 It takes time and practice.

Expect a Roller Coaster

One day you may think you are the master of your emotions, the next day you can be on the floor with no control!

You have to pick yourself up and start again.

It is important to ride that wave of emotions with awareness.

Control Your Reactions

Once you have an awareness of your emotions as they come and go, it is easier to control how you react to them.

Whereas previously you may have reacted in negatively, being an observer of your thoughts allows you to control your reactions in a much more positive way.

Learning to control my mind had a massive positive impact on my relationships with my family.

I realised quite quickly that when I was in the corporate world, I brought a lot of negative behaviours home due to the stresses of the work.

However, I was not really aware of this as it was happening, and had no control over my thoughts and emotions.
